New Hollywood Parking Meters Accept Coins, Cards 7/26/2010

No more digging for change!  LADOT is installing new parking meters which accept credit, debit and gift cards, as well as coins (including new golden dollar coins).  The solar-powered meters use wireless communication to update DOT technicians of malfunctions and jams, as well as reporting status and activity to the department.  The meters can also update users via text messages when a meter is about to expire.
Parking rates, time limits, and hours remain unchanged, and these are now clearly displayed on light-up screens.
Mayor Anonio Villaraigosa, City Councilmember Tom LaBonge, and LADOT General Manager Rita L. Robinson launched an initiate last month to install 10,000 new "Card & Coin Meters" this summer in high-demand parking areas throughout the city of Los Angeles.  Installation is to be completed by the end of August, at which time LA will become the city with the most solar-powered parking meters in the nation.
Along with the new meters comes the new "Pay to Park" enforcement policy - so don't think you're getting out of feeding the meter if you find a broken one; drivers will either need to move to another parking spot or risk getting a ticket.  The new meters will include bright red stickers alerting users of the new policy.  According to LADOT, most parking meter problems are caused by deliberate and criminal vandalism.
